jRPG/RMXP and Lovecraft

February 2nd, 2009

While driving in to the office today I started thinking that we need a way to unite these two communities. A way that will help build this community of cosmic horror lovers.

Well actually the door to that is already out there and just needs to opened by the right team of dark fiction fans. I have a few ideas how this could work and just need to contact potentially interested parties in the respective communities – need to turn interest to commitment.

Sorry about being so cryptic with this post but my gut tells me this has the potential to be huge and I don’t wanna count my shoggoths before they spawn.

There will be more to come as the pieces are put together.

Cosmic Horror Hits The Star Wars Universe

January 27th, 2009

Who woulda thunk it? I used to be a huge Star Wars fan until the The Phantom Menance. However I sat through the rest of the prequels with hopes that they’d get better – in the end Sith wasn’t that bad at all. But then with all the marketing blitzing going on I just got tired of the whole scene and crawled back to the works of Lovecraft and cosmic horror… Until now…

Thanks to a nice tipoff from my wife I was pointed to some interesting news over at ShockTillYouDrop.com – apparently the franchise is now tapping into a new dark side – horror. Writer Joe Schreiber (“Chase the Dead” and “Eat the Dark”) is penning a new Star Wars EU novel titled “Deathtroopers”. Artwork for the novel can be found over at StarWars.com and ShockTillYouDrop.com. Schreiber has confirmed the novel in his blog:

“I’m going to be writing a Star Wars horror novel for Lucasfilm, to be released in November of 2009 (ed: StarWars.com has October 27, 2009). And although I’ve been specifically asked not to talk about the content of the book, I can tell you that A) It’s going to be very scary and B) It’s hopefully going to be released on the same day that my original horror novel The Black Wing comes out. I’m thrilled (to death, obviously) to have this opportunity, and almost as thrilled to tell you about it.”

I have to agree with the folks over at Shock Till You Drop, the artwork has a sort of Hellraiser feel to it. But I’m thinking the aim is probably more Saw or Hostel.

I’ll be picking this one up when it hits the shelves (to be follwed by a review of course). I will be honest in admitting it’s my first EU novel I ever read. Now if only they’d take it a step further and blend some mythos elements in.

Carcosa Studios Launches – Mythos Adventures

January 25th, 2009

Carcosa Studios is proud to announce Mythos Adventures, a new series of adventure games set in the classic 1920’s Lovecraftian universe. So what sets games in the Mythos Adventures series apart from other Lovecraftian projects? Presentation and a relentless faithfulness to the writings of H.P.Lovecraft regardless if it’s an adaptation or an original story.

Our first project is an adaptation of one of MY all time favorite Lovecraft tales, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. We’ll join Doctor Marinus Bicknell Willett on his journey to uncover the reason behind the paranoia and apparent madness of a brilliant antiquarian, Charles Dexter Ward. But what he uncovers may be more than he bargained for.
